== THIS WEEK ==

FRIDAY: Bren is taking us on a West Express route. Straight out to
Turnham Green and straight back. The idea is to go so fast that you
don't notice that this is essentially the same route as he ran in
April. It's a 13.9 mile round trip so he will be leaving promptly and
not hanging around at half time.

SUNDAY: Sunday is a mystery skate. Many of our marshals are still
recovering from Berlin (see below) so organisation is a little
sluggish this week. All we can tell you is that we'll be leaving from
the Hyde Park Corner end of Serpentine Road at 2.00pm and that we'll
be taking a gentle run around town until we get back at around 4.00.

== LAST WEEK ==

Despite an exodus of marshals to the smooth streets of Berlin, there
were plenty of yellow hi-vis out on FRIDAY to help Lead Marshal David
shepherd an enthusiastic crowd on a gentle 12 mile route, which
twisted and turned when it wasn't going straight. There was a definite
legal feel to the second half, which started at Lincoln's Inn Fields
and ran round the back of the Law Courts and along Chancery Lane
before breaking for the south side of the river and a tour of the back
streets of Southwark. The finish was the traditional sprint up
Piccadilly.

Special mention has to go to Annabelle (again) who featured last week
for completing her first London Friday Night Skate and features this
week for recovering from her first concussion. What will that girl not
do to get attention?

Lead Marshal Richard had obviously hit the town on Saturday night and
was feeling rough on SUNDAY. Hence Richard's Rough Route, an exciting
search for interesting surfaces, incorporating two bridges, a few
little hills and a finish the length of the Mall and Constitution
Hill. (See, there's the H word again.) Despite his efforts to break
the spirit of Sunday Strollers, almost two hundred skaters followed
him, whistling Colonel Bogey and refusing to allow him the pleasure of
seeing them fall by the wayside. Then they built a railway bridge but
it was blown up and ... Ooops, wrong route. Richard's River Kwai
Special is going to be later in the year.

== CONGRATULATIONS ==

Well done to Belinda and Allegra who joined Sunday's Stroll on an
impulse and made it to the end. And thanks for getting in touch to say
how much you enjoyed it.

== LONDON SKATE CLOSED FOR WINTER ==

The LondonSkate has started its winter hols so no more Wednesday
skating (at least not officially) until next year.

Thank you, Wednesday people, from all the LFNS marshals (well those
that don't marshal on Wednesdays) for the last 24 weeks for what we
regard as a busman's holiday. See you again next April. Good luck
with the bike upgrade.

== COMING SOON (ISH) ==

As if the Halloween skate (31st October) weren't enough excitement, we
are delighted to announce that on 28th November we will be repeating
the ever-popular CIRCLE LINE SKATE. That bit longer, that bit faster
and that bit more likely to be delayed by a points failure at Earl's
Court, the Circle Line Skate is an annual treat. Put it in your
diaries now.

== NEWS FROM BERLIN ==

Last weekend saw the Berlin In-line Marathon, viewed by most skaters
as the highlight of the World Cup season. It's a race that attracts
world-class athletes but also allows regular street skaters the
opportunity to try out alongside the best. As ever, London skaters
were well represented. Special congratulations to our very own Sol who
skated the 26 miles in one hour and fourteen minutes, making her the
second fastest woman over 40. Her official world ranking is already
number 6 (though she is not a number, she is a free woman). We reckon
that this result suggests there's only one woman her age who can beat
her in Europe. Sol (described as 'literally bouncing' with happiness
at her result) says that skating alongside the world's elite skaters
was an experience she will never forget. As presumably was skating
just one minute behind Tanya, also an LFNS Marshal, who, still being a
mere slip of a thing, was chasing a ranking among the younger
racers. Well done to both for their scarily impressive times.

Even for those whose view of the elite was just a small speck
disappearing into the distance, Berlin will be a special
memory. Congratulations to all who took part. And felicitations to
LFNS Marshal Andy, whose Berlin efforts ended in the casualty
ward. Andy is an enthusiastic racer (Chairman of the Speed Skate Club,
no less) and his first half time showed him set to do well when he
took a bad fall in the second half. He has torn ligaments and a broken
collarbone but was patched up enough to fly back to England, where he
will be getting surgery to repair the damage.

We all wish him a speedy recovery.

== MISSED BERLIN BUT STILL WANT TO RACE? ==

If you read about Berlin and wish you'd been there, there's still time
to enter Cologne. The race is next Sunday, with final entries being
accepted on Saturday - but you have to enter at Cologne, as on-line
registration has closed. You can fly to Cologne by Easyjet or drive
from Calais (it takes 4.5 hours from the port). The bad news is that,
while conditions in Berlin were excellent, the forecast for Cologne
suggests that you might want to take rain wheels.

== ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER WoW ==

That's it for this week. OK, Annabelle, can you tell us what day of
the week it is? Wednesday? Yep, your concussion is OK.
