==THIS WEEK==

On FRIDAY, Lead Marshal Edd is planning a 'Night of the Long Sprints'
for those who felt last Friday was on the slow side. We'll be starting
gently with a quick tour around town and a couple of small downhills
as a warm up, before we recharge at Marylebone. The second half is all
about smooth surfaces, long straight stretches, and a few downhills to
go with it. We go north to get some height and then down by Little
Venice, wending our way around up to Ladbroke Grove for another
downhill sprint, then through Notting Hill to drop down Old Church
Street. Don't be fooled as we pass Hyde Park Corner. This is not the
finish! No - we will be sprinting down to Victoria, pausing around the
lovely traffic system, then sprinting along to Westminster, up the
Mall then a leisurely few minutes around Trafalgar Square before
climbing to the top of Green Park and the last sprint of the night
home.

SUNDAY is a doughnut! Oringinally developed by prehistoric
Native Americans and recognised by a great American president, it
seems we can't escape the torus shaped sweet breads. Because this
Sunday Rogina is leading the skate to the land of "three for two"
fillings and other special offers. In case you hadn't worked it out
yet, we're heading past the British Library for a half time stop at
doughnut shops of Euston Square. Roggie will be muttering "Ich bin ein
Berliner" and hoping for his just desserts. Whether he gets some or
not, the pace will be nice and easy, so it'll be a perfect Sunday
Stroll for experienced skaters with hangovers and beginners
without. Miss this one? Doughnut even think about it.

No, this doesn't mean you can practice burnouts on the Firebrox. Not
unless you're buying new tyres for it afterwards.

==LAST WEEK==

Bren did his back in last week, so Sol had to take over as Lead
Marshal on FRIDAY. Unfortunately, Bren had said we would be travelling
'at speed' and we all forgot to explain to Sol that Bren's notion of
what 'at speed' means is not the same as hers. The result is that the
evening passed in a bit of a blur. Turnham Green definitely featured -
we noticed it because we stopped there to draw breath. Otherwise we
really can't say.

There seemed to be rather fewer people at the end than at the start
but rumour has it that Becca made it the whole way. Congratulations,
Becca! And we hope it started your birthday with a bang. (Not that
we're suggesting you were still in a bar at midnight or anything.)

SUNDAY saw a return of the meteorological unpleasantness that has
ruined so much of what laughingly passed for summer. So no skating for
us then. Sorry.

==SUPER SONIC==

Those of you who managed to remain within half a mile of the front of
Friday's skate (not many did) will have had the privilege of failing
to keep up with Sol: a pleasure shared by most of Europe's skaters.

Sol featured last week for coming second in the 'Women over 40'
category in the Berlin Marathon. It was quite an achievement because
German women take their skating seriously.

Sol left her native Estonia 15 years ago and took up street skating
back in 2002. Estonians appear nuts on skating - the First Lady of
Estonia was at Berlin and Sol beat her by 14 minutes! (I wonder if
they'll let Sol back in?)

In the UK, Sol soon became known as Sonic, because (like the
irritating blue hedgehog) all you ever saw of her was a blur streaking
past. It was bad enough in those days but she has got steadily faster
over the years. She started speed skating two years ago but, despite
her increasing commitment to racing, she is still very much part of
the street skate scene. Last year she was on the committee that
organises (if that's the right word) the Friday and Sunday skates and
she still turns out regularly to marshal.

Sol's secret double life is as a housewife (her cakes are famous and
turn up on the skate from time to time) and mother. Her daughter,
Laura, is also a skater and Mini-Sonic occasionally joins us for the
Stroll, trying (and usually failing) to slow her mother down.

You might want to know that the Estonian for: 'Please slow down; I
think I am going to die,' is 'Palun vótke kiirust maha muidu ma
suren!'

== A WHEELS WELCOME TO NEW SUBSCRIBERS ==

Thanks to the new subscribers who told us last week that they weren't
getting Week on Wheels. We poked around a bit (that's a technical
term) and hit things with hammers (that's not a technical term, though
it did nothing to help) to explain what went wrong: it starts with CGI
timeouts and a lame DNS server, and usually ends with the listener's
eyes glazing over. All better now. We'd sack the IT department, if
only we had one.

==MEANWHILE, ELSEWHERE...==

Anybody with nothing better to do on Saturday might find themselves
wandering past the Victoria Leisure Centre. Unfortunately, it's not in
Victoria, it's in Nottingham. And it's the venue for BattleUK - the
biggest slalom event in Britain and a significant competition on the
international stage. There is usually a fair contingent of London
skaters who turn up to watch or to join in. Best of luck to all those
competing and, as for the spectators, don't forget to be back in
London in time for the Stroll.

Full details are available on Facebook. Somewhere.

== EL FINITO ==

Well, that wraps it up for another week. Congratulations to Annabelle
on achieving her goal of not being mentioned in Week on Wheels for the
third week running. We welcome your comments, criticism and
suggestions, but send them using the feedback form on our site - don't
reply by email as it won't work. To unsubscribe, use the link in the
