Subject: [wow] Week on Wheels: Springtime at Arsenal

==THIS WEEK==

FRIDAY: We're all going up the Arsenal. Lead marshal El Roggie has
produced a route full of interesting surfaces and exciting
gradients. Half time is at the Emirates Stadium simply because it
sounds rude when you say it a certain way. Everything else is a
bonus. Like the fabulous smooth expanse of pavement outside the
stadium. That's a bonus. And the brand new, finished on Thursday-
smooth-surface-of-Jermyn Street. That's a bonus too. As usual the
fun starts at 8pm sharp, so please don't be late.

SUNDAY: It's spring again!

Err ... What?

Well ok - it's spring in the SOUTHERN hemisphere. And let's be
blunt, antipodean lead marshal Richard seems not to have got his
head round the concept of NORTHERN seasons yet. So this Sunday he's
dragging us all off to the not entirely appropriately named "Spring
Gardens", in Vauxhall. At least there's a lap round the Oval to warm
up after half time. Better just smile and nod kindly, you know how
it is.

Incidentally, rumors that the stroll may be be passing both MI5 and
MI6 headquarters are entirely untrue, and have nothing to do with
the forthcoming release of any new James Bond movie. The secretary
has disavowed all knowledge. There's nothing to see here. Go about
your business.

==LAST WEEK==

Mother Nature continues to make amends for the poor weather earlier
in the year with a dry weekend which meant two good skates - both
following the inimitable Markus.

On FRIDAY he promised us a fast-ish skate and certainly delivered.
The mild night meant there were more people than we would usually
expect at this time of year and some had problems with the 13 mile
route - especially the uphill sections that inevitably accompany the
downhills that Markus packed in for us. Sympathy to all those who
finally gave in on the climb up St James's Street. That last haul up
to Piccadilly is always tough, especially after a long run - but
you're so near the end. The marshals do try to keep people in when
they've made it so far (there was a fair bit of pushing going on at
the back) so stick in if you can. Remember, winter skates are often
faster than summer ones. If you can't quite make it, don't
despair.Try again next week.

Actually, Markus gave people a chance to try the first half of the
skate again on SUNDAY, when (eco-warrior that he is) he recycled his
Friday route to form the first part of the Stroll. Because it was a
Stroll, the steepest hills were cut out but we still found ourselves
negotiating Bishops Bridge and the flyovers under Westway, not to
mention finishing with a blast the full length of Park Lane. Almost
150 Strollers joined us for the afternoon, including several people
who hadn't skated it before. We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Photos onsite, including one of what could be the best helmet ever!

==AAARGH!! ANOTHER REMINDER==

Just one more Friday skate before Halloween. Yes, I know we
mentioned it last week but it's a big night - and we wouldn't want
you forgetting your costumes.

==LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOONS==

Despite devolution, the folks in Scotland still insist on mucking
about with the clocks all over the UK. This means that from Sunday,
afternoons are officially abolished. Welcome to the joys of
Greenwich (really) Mean Time.

The good news is that you get an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning
and can still make the Stroll at 2.00pm

==WOULD LIKE TO MEET==

After profiles of two of our more, shall we say, experienced
marshals, there have been suggestions that there is an opportunity
here for some of our younger recruits. Step forward singleton Phil.

Phil is a youthful 22 and his hobbies include climbing, parkour and
video games. More importantly, he loves hosting parties, meeting
people and sitting in front of the fire with a good movie and a
glass or two of wine. He's also just started learning salsa and
would love someone to practice his moves with. Phil is an insurance
broker at Lloyds and, despite the credit crunch, he still has a job.
So, girls, if you are looking for a fit young man who likes romantic
evenings in front of the fire, has a decent income and a house
(!!!), Phil can be contacted most Fridays at 8.00pm and Sunday
afternoons at 2.00. Wear a rose in your hair and tell him you want
to snuggle under his duvet. (And, yes, Phil really did tell us all
those things about himself - though he had no idea what we were
going to do with the information.)

==DON'T EVEN THINK OF MENTIONING XMAS==

Look, it's October. So we don't talk about Christmas. And any red
hatted elves out selling tickets for the Santa Stroll are clearly
figments of the imagination. There is no way that we are going to
plug something that doesn't even happen until Saturday 13 December.

It's disgraceful. I feel a strongly worded letter to the 'Daily
Mail' coming on.

==THE END==

So we reach the end of summer and the end of another Week on Wheels.
