==THIS WEEK==

Yes, it's here. Friday brings the Halloween Skate - a celebration of
ghouls, ghosties, witches, men in women's clothing and all things
skatery.

We're starting at the usual place and time (8.00pm from Wellington
Arch if you really don't know) but the skate will be slower than the
average LFNS to allow passers-by lots of time to appreciate the blood
and horror on display - and because skating while holding on your
headgear with one hand and trying not to trip over your cape can make
sprints the tiniest bit tricky. The route will be around and about the
centre of town to allow for the maximum amount of posing for
tourists. Half time is at Covent Garden.

We don't usually mention the possibility of rain here but the forecast
for Friday is a little bit negative so check that the skate is running
by looking on http://www.lfns.co.uk from 5.00pm on Friday. If it does
rain, we have a contingency plan. It's called Saturday. If Friday
night is rained off (and ONLY if the skate is rained off) we will be
running the Halloween skate at 5.00pm on Saturday. The skate will meet
at the Hyde Park Corner end of Serpentine Road. (So that's *outside*
the park on Friday or *inside* the park on Saturday. I hope you're all
paying attention - there will be a test.)

If Saturday is a washout too, then we will run an extra skate after
the Stroll on Sunday.

And speaking of the SUNDAY STROLL, this week Dan will be taking us to
Battersea. He's never led a skate to Battersea before, so make sure he
remembers to stop for half time in the park.

Please remember that with so many supernatural surprises to add to the
normal hazards of London's traffic, now more than ever, you skate at
your own risk.

==LAST WEEK==

Last FRIDAY Roggina took the LFNS to the Emirate's Stadium to enjoy
all the pleasures that North London has to offer. Although there were
a few hills on the way, eight out of ten cats that expressed a
preference said they were "purrfect". The evening also provided the
legendary skater called Sparky with a chance to try out his brand new
speedskates. As one skater put it later that night, Sparky was faster
than just about everyone when he used tired old rec. skates. Now he's
on speedskates all the existing records will be meaningless. "To be
fair to everyone else we'll need to rewrite the record books. There
will be times recorded before Sparky had speedskates (BSS) and times
taken after (ASS). The mind boggles.

Congratulations to Eva Linn (that's her first name), who completed her
first LFNS on Friday. She breezed through it. Eva is Norwegian, so she
was especially pleased to be able to combine here first LFNS with her
first trip up the Arsenal, probably. Eva is also a European pool
champion, so if you chance to meet her when she's not on skates, don't
forget to ask for a demonstration of how she chalks a cue.

On SUNDAY AUTUMN slapped down any notion of a SPRINGTIME Sunday
Stroll. Did antipodean lead-marshal Richard learn anything about the
nature of northern seasons from Sundays woolly weather? "Spring in
this country," he says, "I don't know. You'd think it was April or
something". Yes, yes, smile and nod. Smile and nod. What's next we
wonder? Christmas in July?

==MORE HALLOWEEN STUFF==

The traditional post-skate Halloween party can't find space on Friday
so you'll all have to make your own entertainment that night. Those of
you who haven't been arrested by Saturday may like to wander over to
the Vic, where there will be mirth and merriment and another chance to
show off your costumes in the Theatre Bar (upstairs) from
8.00pm. Please remember to take your skates off before entering the
pub.

==GET SHIRTY==

The LFNS marshals -- in conjunction with the LFNS knitting and crochet
club -- are proud to announce a new and rather splendid range of
T-Shirts, sweatshirts and other apparel. Most people will probably buy
them simply because they look fab - and we're not just saying that,
they really really do!! After all, Caoimhin designed them, and many of
you know what a fabulous designer he is. You might also like to know
that all the proceeds go to fund the LFNS and Sunday Stroll. Walkie
talkies and various spares and repairs for the music bike are a few
examples of things we've spent money on recently.

The shirts are made to order and supplied from the USA, and we've
found it takes about two weeks from placing the order to receiving the
shirt. The value range of cotton shirts cost around £15 ex. postage,
and performance micro fibre fabric ones that wick away sweat faster
than the speed of love, well they cost just a little more. So waste
not a minute, and be among the first to wear one.

==JOURNALIST IN "DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT THEY'RE WRITING ABOUT" SHOCK==

It was nice of the Saturday Times to plug Inline Skating in their
'staying fit on the cheap' feature a couple of weeks
ago. Unfortunately, their journalist's enthusiasm for saving every
possible penny had her telling her readers that "you'll need to invest
£50 in a good pair of skates but these will last for years". Well,
yes, they will - provided you don't ever try to skate in them.

It was an odd thing to write as they offered a link to LS Mike's
useful site: http://www.londonskaters.com. I spoke to Mike who
confirms that, like the LFNS, he recommends that people look to spend
around £100 on skates. You *can* get bargains (especially at this time
of year) but below £100, you tend to get what you're paying for.

We did ask the Times what they thought they were doing but just like
those pesky politicians journalists love to poke fun at, they weren't
returning our call.

==OTHER SKATE BRANDS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE==

Everyone has their favourite skate brand. Skate champ and instructor
Naomi currently favours Seba - but this is probably not unconnected to
the fact that they sponsor her. As part of the sponsorship deal, Naomi
gives a free slalom lesson to everyone who buys a pair of Seba
skates. Now that's probably not a good enough reason on its own to buy
the skates - but Seba sell a lot of skates and Naomi gets very few
requests for free lessons. So, if you have recently bought a pair of
Sebas (or get a pair for Xmas) check down at the bottom of the box and
see if there's a voucher for a free lesson with Naomi. If there isn't,
she'll respond well to a receipt.

The LFNS doesn't plug any skate brands (personally I find it's best to
buy whichever ones are the same shape as your feet) but if you *have*
bought Sebas, you might as well pick up on the freebie.

==(UN)DEAD END==

Two ghosts walk into a bar and the barman says: "Sorry, we don't serve
spirits."

Boom! Boom!
