==THIS WEEK==

FRIDAY
No more Diwali, Halloween, or Bonfire Night... nothing left except a
long straight dire stretch until it's Christmas. Which is a bit like
the black route up Nine Elms Lane - nothing except a long straight
lovely stretch of road until you have to stop again. So, on FRIDAY
bring your left over Halloween Candy, we bring the left over songs
from the Halloween mix, and together we'll have a party on the
streets! Half time corner of Albert Bridge Road and Battersea Park
Road.

SUNDAY
On Sunday we shall dare the Autumn weather gods once more by
attempting to run the stroll to "Spring Gardens", in Vauxhall.
Halftime overlooked by the satellite and CCTV encrusted edifice of
Mr Bond's payroll office. The gods didn't take too kindly to this
sort of insolence last time we tried it. Let's see if Halloween's
shenanigans have made any difference

==LAST WEEK==

The Halloween skate is probably the highlight of the London Skating
year. A costume party on skates, blasting its way through the centre
of town with two music bikes and more Asboxes than we could count
all synchronised to play a thumping mix of everyone's favourite
horror music (and thanks to Wotnobrakes for putting it together).

Bren couldn't make it this year so Lead Witch was Sol and she led us
around and about through all the favourite tourist spots (Piccadilly
Circus featured twice). Even though the skate spread out a bit with
some of the costumes slowing people down, the traffic was much more
tolerant than usual and we were cheered on our way by people lining
the streets to take photos as we passed. Possibly the most
spectacular costume was Bender the robot (from 'Futurama' for those
of you who aren't cartoon fans). Inside was Richard, one of our
regular Lead Marshals. Those who wonder how he built it should check
out http://buildingbender.blogspot.com/

It's really sad that some drunks crashed the skate and put one
person into casualty with a cut chin but it may make people feel
better to know that the creep responsible then fell in front of
another skater who collapsed heavily on top of him. The skater was
unhurt, the drunk apparently less so.

That was the only blot on an otherwise fantastic night. Well done to
all those who managed to cope with their amazing costumes and
especially to Miriam and Marika who had never been on an LFNS before
and who both finished their first skate in style.

After the excesses of the various Halloween skater parties on
Saturday (I only counted three but I'm sure there were others) the
amazing thing was that 56 people managed to drag themselves out for
the SUNDAY STROLL. More amazingly still, an impressive number of
marshals fought off their hangovers to escort them. These few, these
happy few, were rewarded with beautiful autumn sunshine and a skate
that hardly ever seemed to stop rolling until it reached the cafe
stop at Battersea. Well done to Paula, whose first time out it was.

==ONLY 14 MORE SKATING DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS==

Now that the Halloween Skate is over, we can turn our attention to
the next big event: the SantaSkate. This year, the skating Santas
will be taking over the streets of London on Saturday 13th December.

The SantaSkate is organised by LondonSkate and its friends from the
London Friday Night Skate and the Sunday Stroll. This year it will
aim to attract between 400 and 500 roller skating Santa’s from as
far away as Germany, France and even Lapland!

This event is the year's main fundraiser for all three of the London
skates and we do ask you to contribute £10 to join. For your money,
you get a Santa suit to wear on the skate. If you have never seen
400 Santas on skates, it's a truly amazing sight, guaranteed to have
small children grinning wildly as you pass.

Santa's little helpers (you can tell them by their red hats) will be
out on all the skates in November to sell tickets. Don't worry about
what happens if it rains - the skate will be moved to another day.

Tickets usually sell out, so please buy early. If there are a lot of
early sales, we can get in more costumes - but if there is a last
minute rush, you may well be disappointed.

== ADVANCE NOTICE ROAD CLOSURES ==

So if you thought it wasn't slippery enough underfoot in the park on
Sunday, what with leaf mould and mud and wet surfaces, you'll be
pleased to hear that the HYDE PARK WINTER WONDERLAND is building an
open-air ice rink there to complete the experience. It opens on 22nd
November, though we expect them to be setting up stuff in advance,
so: if you arrive at Serpentine Road on a Sunday in the near future
and find it's buried underneath ghost trains and hot dog stalls,
look for us on South Carriage Drive or (in extremis) over the road
at Wellington Arch (where the LFNS leaves). Last year they did leave
us a bit of space at the East end of Serp Road, so our start point
was not affected - we hope the same will happen this year. But if
you usually park in the Triangle car park, you might find it takes
longer than normal to get down to our end of the road.

== IF THE SHOE FITS ==

We found half a pair of footwear on Friday's skate. If you think it
might have been yours, drop us a line with a description and tell us
when you're next skating, and if we remember we'll bring it along.

==SHUFFLING OFF==

So, as we sweep up the detritus of our Halloween celebrations (and
wake the odd skater still dozing in the wreckage) that's all for
another week.
