==THIS WEEK==

FRIDAY sees the annual Circle Line Skate. We head off from Hyde Park
Corner to Victoria and then work our way round every Circle Line
station to Sloane Square. It's further than a regular London Friday
Night Skate (17 miles) so it goes a little faster but we get two
breaks - one at Liverpool Street and another at Paddington. And this
year not two but three Lead Marshals share the load: Sol, Bren and
David. The Circle Line Skate is not a huge social experience, like
Halloween or the Santa Stroll, but, for those who love the feel of
tarmac under their wheels, it's one of the highlights of the
year. Because it's a long skate, we try to leave promptly at
8.00.pm. Don't miss it!

The SUNDAY STROLL is not quite a repeat of the rained-off route from
two weeks ago, but it does look similar. To celebrate finally
collecting the degree that has been sitting on a shelf waiting for him
for the past decade or more, Lead Marshal Dan is taking us on a route
with a vaguely academic theme (it goes past UCL, and crosses Oxford
St, which as we all know is the road to Oxford). Gowns optional.

More significantly, Dan has led the only Stroll that was not rained
off in the whole of November, so polish your rabbit's foot, kiss your
four leaf clover and hope that his luck still lasts. Please note that
because of the Winter Wonderland (see below) the Stroll will be
assembling just inside the fancy gates between the park and the
Wellington Arch.

==LAST WEEK==

On FRIDAY, fifty or so skaters and two photographers from TimeOut
joined the LFNS for a trip to Clapham. The weather was certainly cold
but, despite rain to the east and rain to the west, Lead Marshal
Roggie's choice of route defied the weather and the roads stayed
perfectly dry. With a relatively small number of people the skate
moved at a good pace and made it back to Hyde Park Corner by around
9:45.

SUNDAY: Last week we wrote: 'It's November. It rained. Get used to
it.' Do we really need to tell you again?

==WINTER WONDERLAND==

We mentioned a few weeks ago that the Winter Wonderland would be
eating into Serpentine Road. Now it's in full swing, it's clear that
it's less 'eaten into' than 'gobbled up'. The road is full of rides
and stalls and all the fun of the fair all the way to the lake. The
good news is that there's a heated covered bar. Otherwise, very little
to attract skaters. (And, yes, the rink does still have a lamppost in
the middle of it.)

==SANTASKATE==

The rotten weather has meant cancelled skates and cancelled skates has
meant less chance to buy your tickets for the SantaSkate. The official
start of Skater Xmas, the SantaSkate is now just over a fortnight away
(on December 13), so please get your tickets as soon as you can.

The SantaSkate is the only skate that you get charged for. Tickets are
£10 but do include a snazzy red costume and white beard absolutely
free. Bring your own belt.

This event is organised by the LondonSkate but they contribute a share
of the profits to the LFNS. It's the year's main fundraiser for all
three of the London skates and well worth joining in. Even if you
don't care about us having any money next year, joining the skate lets
you be part of a parade of up to 400 wheeled Santas. If you've never
done it, you don't know what you're missing and if you've skated it
before, you'll want to do it again. Get your tickets from any of
Santa's little helpers on the Stroll or the LFNS. (They're the ones
with the red hats.)

Don't worry about the skate being rained off. It will still happen -
just on another day.

==ONLY SEVEN MORE SKATING DAYS TO CHRISTMAS==

Time to be thinking of stockings and what to put in them. We'll be
buying lots of LFNS T SHIRTS. The first deliveries have arrived, and
you may already have seen people wearing them. If you want one too,
don't despair, there's still time to buy one and have it delivered
before Xmas. Of course, the shirts look fab, and you might also like
to know that all the proceeds go to fund the LFNS and Sunday Stroll.

Although the first batch were ordered from the USA, our supplier has
recently opened a UK based web site. We reckon it will still take
about two weeks from placing the order to receiving the shirt, but the
UK site should cut down on the delivery charges. The value range of
cotton shirts cost around £20 including postage, and performance micro
fibre fabric ones cost just a little more. Feel free to compare UK and
USA prices by visiting our shops at http://www.zazzle.co.uk/roggie and
http://www.zazzle.com/roggie

Or, if you prefer, see our web site for more info first:

And as a stocking filler, could we recommend our cheeky little DVD: A
Year on Skates? featuring the Circle Line Skate, Chequered Stroll, and
this year's Easter Bunny Stroll, plus trailers, out takes and
exclusive footage of the Egg & Spoon Race. Price is just £10 plus
postage and packing (£1.99). All profits go directly to the LFNS.

There's also a rumour that there will be a calendar coming out in the
next week or two featuring scantily clad skaters. Look out for a Lead
Marshal you all know and love.

The profits from this will be going to a cancer charity and we'd love
to be able to give you more details but they're not available
yet. Perhaps it's a 2010 calendar?

==POETRY CORNER==

Last week we carried a poem [was it really? Ed] by our very own
Marshal Phil. His example has inspired others to verse including a
brilliant (no, it is, really) parody of William Mc Gonagall's epic
'Tay Bridge Disaster' that is now doing the rounds of the skate
community.

Here's a sample:

When the pack left the Park
The skaters' hearts were light and felt not dark,
But a Taxi exhaust blew a smokey, black gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the skaters with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Camden Parkway."

We'd love to publish all of it it here but it is epic in every sense
and would double the length of this newsletter. But if more than ten
people contact us (using the feedback form on the website) to ask us
to print it, we'll carry the full work next week.

==LINES ARE NOW CLOSING==
